Several people around the world fear going to the dentist and feel intimidated about the dental equipment and treatment procedures. Research suggests that people refrain from going to the dentist for oral check-up because of their fear. If you are one of those individuals who are afraid to go to a dental clinic, you would be happy to know that there is something called ‘Sedation Dentistry’, which has proved to be an excellent tool in helping people alleviating the fear of going to the dentist’s office. dentist5 What exactly is Sedation Dentistry? It is essentially a specialized pharmacological technique that helps the patient to feel more comfortable, calm and at ease before, during and after dental procedure. The tool is incredibly beneficial for people who have mild to moderate level of fear about dental procedures. Sedation Dentistry is of three types and depending on the condition of the patient’s oral health, the dental expert can use more than one form of sedation to carry out the procedure. The three types of dentistry are explained in detail below:
  • Oral Sedation:
As the name itself suggests, this sedation technique involves giving patients a pill that is to be taken orally, either a few hours before the dental procedure is carried out or on the penultimate day. The pill essentially aids in keeping the patients relaxed and alleviating his/her anxiety and fear of undergoing dental procedure. The oral sedation is the cheapest form of sedation and it is given to people with low levels of fear.
  • Inhalation Sedation:
This type of the sedation is also referred as nitrous sedation and it involves use of nitrous oxide gas. The sedation is administered by the expert dentist at his/his office right before the dental procedure. The nitrous oxide gas, which is commonly known as the laughing gas is a commonly used sedative among the dentists around the world. The gas is given to the patient through a nasal mask and its effect starts within few seconds. It creates a euphoric feeling in the mind of the patient. Depending on the kind of the dental procedure being carried out, the doctors provide the sedations on a regular basis at appropriate level. Once the procedure is completed, the sedation effect fades out and the patient recovers quickly.
  • Intravenous Sedation:
The intravenous sedation is recommended only for people who have high level of fear of undergoing dental procedure. It is considered to be the strongest form of sedation. In this technique the sedative is injected by the dentist in the bloodstream through injection. This type of sedation allows the patient to enjoy a deep form of relaxation throughout the time the patient spends at the dentist’s office. After the dental procedure is completed, for safety reasons the patient much have a chaperone from the dentist office. Thus, in a nutshell, sedation in dentistry is all about making the patient comfortable during the dental examination.
